Highlights

The best place to start exploring Zurich is Lindenhof hill, which has a unique position as the historic core and the oldest public green area in Zurich. Thanks to its central hilltop location and the shady roof of the linden garden, Lindenhof offers a magnificent view of the right bank of the Limmat, the university buildings, and the old town. Descending the hill down the narrow streets of the old city we will admire the largest clock face in Europe adorns the modest turret of St. Peter is the oldest church in Zurich. Rudolf Brun, the city's first independent mayor, was buried here in 1360. The present building was consecrated in 1706 as the first church built under Protestantism. From the lively Münsterhof square we will walk to Fraumünster, which was built on the remains of a former abbey for aristocratic women and was founded in 853 by Louis the German for his daughter Hildegard. The monastery had a significant weight in the city. The abbess became the head of the city, managed the economy, and was appointed the mayor of Zurich. Opposite the Fraumünster, on the opposite bank of the Limmat, rises the Grossmünster. The central part of the cathedral near the river dam was built on the site of a Carolingian church. The beginning of the construction of the cathedral dates back to 1090. Grossmünster played an important role in the development of Protestantism in Switzerland. The stern pastor Ulrich Zwingli (depicted on the bronze doors, by Otto Munch) preached the reformed Christian faith here. In 1487, the famous twin towers of the cathedral in the form of wooden towers were first built, in 1781 they were destroyed by fire. Later, stone towers were erected in a neo-Gothic style.
